Independence
Independence means something different to everyone, I think. It also changes throughout a person’s life.
The US declared their independence from the tyranny of England, thanks in large part to the soldiers and our leaders at that time – 232 years ago.
My mother – she declared her independence from the abuse and tyranny of her 2nd husband, thanks in large part to her courage and a little help from her parents – 35 years ago.
I declared my independence from my abusive ex – 13 years ago.
We, as a country, have helped millions of people around the world live independent lives.
We, as citizens, continue to enjoy the same form of independence that our forefathers fought for those 232 years ago and our generations to come will enjoy those same freedoms, even if we don’t necessarily AGREE with them all the time. We are allowed to. That’s independence.
Kids who just graduated high school and are tasting those first few days of “freedom”. Yup, that’s independence too.

Ever since I watched the HBO series, John Adams, I’ve had a bigger sense of appreciation for what transpired all those years ago. Yes, I know that everyone wants to thank our troops – but I also want to thank those who did what no one before them had done. That goes for my mom, too
