Childhood Memories

1932 rice krispiesWhen my oldest brother & I were growing up, we didn’t get to have many sugar cereals.  Often, it was one of those puffed wheat jobs that needed 3 tablespoons of sugar to make it taste good TO A KID. (Stop rolling your eyes, mom!)  But one of the cereals I do remember us having, that didn’t have any sugar but we didn’t mind was Kellogg’s Rice Krispies®.  I LOVED Rice Krispies® and still do to this day.  We never put anything but bananas in the bowl with them.  But oh, was it good!  I can still remember being given the very important job of slicing the bananas while my grandfather poured the cereal.  My oldest brother didn’t like bananas in his cereal, so the banana? ALL MINE, baby.   A banana slice in every bite of snap, crackle & pop® of cereal. Mmmmmmm.  It takes me right back to when I was 5.  It truly does.

I’ve tried to pass on that yummy tradition to my kids as well.  My daughter will, begrudgingly, allow me to put the bananas in her Rice Krispies®.  My oldest son? Not so much, but he will learn … one day… to truly Appreciate THE KRISPIE®.

The other thing I really love about Kellogg’s Rice Krispies® is the other neat things you can do with them – the recipes you can make with them!  Our favorite, of course, is Rice Krispies® treats.  Would you believe they were invented in 1939!?  We’ve expanded on the original recipe, though.  Instead of just using plain old WHITE marshmallows, in the past we’ve used STRAWBERRY marshmallows and made Strawberry Krispies® Treats!  Instead of using plain Rice Krispies®, we’ve used COCOA Krispies® and made Cocoa Krispie Treats.   I can put a few tablespoons full of Rice Krispies on the baby’s high chair tray and he’ll munch on them while I’m making breakfast/lunch/dinner.  They’re just too cool!

We haven’t tried the Rice Krispies with Real Strawberries® yet, but we will – maybe I’ll get a coupon for them.  Hey, speaking of coupons, check out these old boxes! Talk about bringing back memories – but the amounts on the coupons crack me up! LOL

When you get a minute or ten, head on over to Kellogg’s Rice Krispies® site and take a stroll back through your childhood memories.  There’s tons to do on the site, including the recipes I mentioned before, games, and you can learn more about their Playing for Keeps program.  It’s helping parents & researchers learn the importance of your child’s play.  Isn’t that cool?

They’rrrrrrrrre GREAT!

ServeImage.aspx

Does that bring back memories from when you were a kid?  It sure does for me.  Tony the Tiger™ & his awesome Frosted Flakes  – well, EVERYONE KNEW they were Grrrrrrreat!  But of course, 30+ years later,  with 700 different varieties of cereals, they all seem to blend together.  They tout different things, but really, aren’t they all the same?

When MomCentral asked me to check out the Kellogg’s® website for their new Frosted Flakes GOLD cereal™, in the back of my brain, I was thinking “another cereal.. yay” (with sarcasm, of course) but then I went to read the site.  To be honest, I’m a little tired of everything having EXTRA. ENERGY. ADDED – all the energy drinks, etc. with all those wonderful chemicals to jack you up a little while.  But Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Gold™ doesn’t have all those fake things to add energy.  What’s it got?   HONEY!  They’re made with whole grains, too.   So honey & whole grains – that’s definitely something I wouldn’t mind my kids jumping into for their first meal of the day.  They don’t need energy drinks – they need GOOD stuff.  This looks GOOD!  In fact… (wait for it…)

It looks  GRRRRRRRRRREAT!

Oh! And there’s also some recipes on there to use Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Gold™ cereal like Tony the Tiger muffins, which would be great for MAMA since she can’t eat cereal much anymore or for the baby who can’t eat cereal yet. YAY Kelloggs!

Also, Kellogg’s® is having a contest, in conjunction with their program “Earn Your Stripes”, which encourages kids to get out and play, participate in sports and lead a healthy lifestyle.  The deadline is coming soon, so send your kids over to Earn their Stripes

Monday Morning..ish Meme

I got SO distracted today – I have barely left my computer, and haven’t gotten much of ANYTHING accomplished!  I spent the last 2 hrs looking for the site that I’d ordered my first set of photo greeting cards from.  Then, when I had just about given up and was getting up to go downstairs to start dinner, I found it  LOL

Check out this photo I did this weekend!

I’m always amazed when something I see in my head actually translates into the camera!

Is anyone else psyched about tonight’s Dancing with the Stars? I know I am!

Can someone tell me why every performer has to be so completely choreographed that you can’t pay attention to the music because you’re watching them dance?

Ok, that’s enough from me on that.

On with the meme!

May 19th Questions:

1. If you were cooking dinner for a friend, what would you serve? (If you can, post the recipe!) WHY would you serve this particular meal for this particular friend?

2. How many hours a day do you spend blogging? What do you think about this number? If you weren’t spending that time blogging, what would you be spending that time doing?

  • It depends.  Some days, I don’t do any blogging – other days, I’ll spend a couple of hours, not only writing but also getting stuff or pictures for the post.  If I wasn’t blogging, I’d be looking for ways to improve it LOL

3. How much money is in your wallet right now? Do you carry a lot of cash on you? Why or why not?

  • I don’t even carry a wallet.  I have about $30 but that’s more than I usually carry but I thought I’d need more this weekend.

4. What is your favorite day of the year? WHY is this your favorite day of the year? Now, what is your second favorite? Why is this your second favorite?

  • Not sure anymore. I really enjoy my children’s birthdays.  I really enjoy the big holidays, like Thanksgiving & Christmas.  My anniversary w/hubby.  In recent years, all of these things have become more enjoyable to me :)

Thanks for the questions, Karen!

Musical Monday #1

Stay at Home Mom & Military Wife

a new lil meme I’ve never done before. here goes!

Answer the question on your blog and use Mr. Linky!
If you don’t know the answer post the question on your site and challenge your readers to answer the question.
Q:
Name the artist and song that these lyrics are from:
(bonus question: what year did this song come out?)
Sittin’ in the mornin’ sun
I’ll be sittin’ when the evenin’ come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch ‘em roll away again, yeah

So my answer would be – which time?  I know Otis Redding did it (Sittin on the Dock of the Bay) but then again, so did Michael Bolton.  So I am not sure which one she’s meaning, but I do know that song – LOVE it by Michael Bolton :)
