updates
Ok, a few updates and then we’re off for our errands today.
- I did go back to the chiropractor – expressed my concerns and in the end, allowed him to adjust me again – this time went much more smoothly, but I don’t know if I’ll go back, simply because it’s not doing anything for the numbness.
- The bucket is EMPTY!
- The binky was under the stupid baseboard radiator – I HAVE NO IDEA how it got there.
- I WON a giveaway from those awesome chicks at Pinks & Blues Girls by being in their Lucky Loop – have you joined it yet??
Ok, we’re off – have a great Saturday, everyone!

Recapping the week + a giveaway
about 1 year ago - Comments Off
Such a momentous week this was! Of course, there was that lil hubub on Tuesday, but BUT, do you know what else happened?
Zachary started doing puzzles! I’d bought him this wooden puzzle for Christmas but didn’t it put it away well enough and he & his sister found it. They futzed around with it for a couple of days, and then it SOMEHOW got opened. Somehow. I’m sure it was a sprite or a gremlin or something. Anyway, Zachary kept trying to get in there, and I finally relented and opened it for him last night and that boy went to town! He loved it. He played with it for well over an hour. Later, both Libby & Zachary played with it for another hour or so before they got around to pretending they were action figures or something. But it was just SO cool to watch!
This morning, Zachary woke up WAY TOO early, and wasn’t interested in his bottle, so I pulled the puzzle over to him (he insisted on having it in the bed) and he went to work on it again. Last night, he was being a very 20-month-oldish in trying to force the pieces in. This morning, he woke up with a new tactic in mind, and now he finesses them into place a lot more gently, and therefore, more successfully. I sat beside him, doing the animal noises of each animal when he’d get the piece in, and tell him what it was.
In other news, there’s been some fun stuff going on at my other sites, so I thought I’d let you know.
On Reality…really?, I wrote about this week’s fun on Dancing with the Stars.
Over on my reviews blog, I reviewed Ghiradelli Chocolates (yeah, I know you’re jealous now!), Promise SureShots (that I have coupons to give out!) and Chex Mix Bars. The best part of all that was that along with the Chex Mix Bars – I got a GREAT giveaway for you as well! But you’ll have to go over there to see what I mean
On my photography blog, I posted a beautiful photo for today’s photohunter theme, Together.
Finally, this weekend I will be working on moving my site to my new host (if you are in the market for a new web host, PLEASE let me know!), so I’m mostly posting this for those who read through their RSS feeds. I’m hoping to fix the IE problems, as well as update things, etc. Hopefully, it won’t be too long or too painful!

What does motherhood mean to you…
about 1 year ago - Comments Off
and can you fit it into a 60 second video? I am by NO means a fan of video cameras, particuarly with me in front of it – but for $30,000, I’m gonna plant my mug right square in the middle of one in the next few days because Huggies, in celebration of THIRTY YEARS of hugging baby bottoms, is looking for your videos on what motherhood means to you.
Yes, that’s right – $30,000! That’s what the grand prize winner will receive if their video receives the most votes. Time to dust off those address books!
Even if you don’t own a video camera, hop over to their website because they’re touring the country and if they come to a city near you, you can record your video right there!
Huggies will also select 30 videos from moms across the country to feature in their new commercials.
Here’s more -
About Generation Huggies:
Now through November 20, 2008, there are two ways for moms to create a video reflecting on “What Motherhood Means to Me.”
1. Videos can be uploaded to www.GenerationHuggies.com
2. Alternatively, moms can create a video on-site when they
visit a local Generation Huggies event.
3. Videos should be no longer than 60 seconds in length and
no larger than 5MB.
4. Everyone can participate by giving a hug, or vote, to their
favorite video through November 30, 2008.
5. Judging ends November 30, 2008.
Visit www.GenerationHuggies.com for the official sweepstakes rules and details. Entry is limited to one per day per person or e-mail address during the Sweepstakes Period. Void where prohibited; no payment or purchase necessary. The sweepstakes is open to legal residents of the 50 United States plus the District of Columbia, age 18 or older.
If you do create a video, I hope you’ll also post it on your blog – and please, feel free to come back and comment! I’d love to see everyone’s
.
My thanks to Mom Central for the opportunity to share this with you.

a letter to a friend

Dear Susan,
I thought of you the other day when I slipped out of my blouse & bra and put my too-small johnny on with the tie in front. I thought of you as I sat there answering questions about my family history while my too-small johnny exposed me long before I was ready to be exposed. I thought of you as I stepped up to this monstrous machine and listened as the technician explained what would happen. I was still thinking of you as all shreds of dignity were ground into the tile as she handled my breasts way more than I ever thought would be necessary, twisting and turning them, and me, in opposite directions before applying ridiculous amounts of painful pressure as the vice closed down.
I withstood the pain, doing as I’d read and did my labor breathing through them. I withstood the abject embarrassment humiliation of the whole experience, finally being allowed to re-dress and leave. I did this all voluntarily (as the tech reminded me upon my arrival). I did this all with you in mind.
Because of the first thing I ever read of your blog, that connected me to you forever, where you were heartbroken because you had to wean your little boy, just a month older than my littlest boy, that you weren’t ready – you weren’t ready, you just weren’t ready. You had no warning. You had no choice. You had cancer, and it was bad.
I awarded you the perfect post award that month, although I knew that nothing in the entire world could ever EVER replace that experience of loss that you were just beginning. But I wanted to show the world the strength behind those words, those tears, that heart break. I wanted to shout from the top of the blogosphere – LOOK AT THIS WOMAN!!
In the intervening months, you’ve gone through some terrible trials, and it’s because you shared your story, your journey, your pain with us that I thought of you this week when I went for my first mammogram. Because as much as I admire you, I never want to BE you.
Love,
Dawn

Stop MRSA Now!
about 1 year ago - 2 comments
When my nephew Dylan was born, within days of going home from the hospital, he was back in, diagnosed with a staph infection. It was a terrifying time for my sister & her husband, as well as the rest of our family, because here was this tiny baby, all of a sudden SO sick.
Thankfully, he recovered and just celebrated his 5th birthday. Unfortunately, others aren’t so lucky.
According to stopmrsanow.org, MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a type of Staph bacteria found on the skin and in the nose that is resistant to antibiotics. More than 90,000 Americans get potentially deadly MRSA infections every year and in 2005, nearly 19,000 Americans died from MRSA infections. More deaths are linked to MRSA infections than AIDS.
There are two known types of MRSA. You may have heard of Healthcare-Associated (HA-MRSA), which occurs in hospitals and nursing homes, but a newer type of MRSA is Community-Associated (CA-MRSA), which has recently begun to spread in public settings like gyms, locker rooms, households and schools.
Mom Central has asked us to help get the word out to help prevent MRSA. The following tips will help you keep yourself and your family safe from such a potentially deadly infection.
Scrub up – Wash hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand rub sanitizer.
Wipe it down – Use a disinfecting bleach solution to wipe down and disinfect hard surfaces. (1 tablespoon of disinfecting bleach diluted in 1 quart of water)
Cover your cuts – Keep any nicks or wounds covered with a clean, dry bandage until healed.
Keep to yourself – Do not share personal items, like towels or razors, that come into contact with bare skin.
Use a barrier – Keep a towel or clothing between skin and shared equipment.
It’s really not that hard. It’s basic. It’s necessary. Realizing now that I went to the hospital the other day for my mammogram with my hand where I’d jammed it into the asphalt still unhealed, I left myself open for much more than painful breasts.

More blahs

Things have been pretty quiet on the blogging front, mostly because things at home aren’t all wine & roses as of late.
Things have been pretty tense for a long time now. Part of it is his hours, but you know, it’s more than that.
Last weekend after they dropped me off at BlogHer, Jimmy took the kids over to the Minuteman National Forest – they toured it for a bit, and then realized that my camera (not the Nikon) was missing. They were afraid they’d left it somewhere along the trail they’d walked, so then they spent the next hour or so searching for it. All the while, Jimmy was getting increasingly pissed off at the world, and Anthony. When they finally found it – IN THE STROLLER – he headed out to take then to lunch.
Apparently, after lunch, he decided to go find the hotel, get them checked in and chilled out.
It took him an hour & a half to find the hotel. He just drove around & around, trying to find it.
Imagine how extra special his mood was then!
When I called to find out what to do about getting from the BlogHer hotel to the Homewood Suites that we were staying at, I got an idea of that mood.
In any case, after he picked me up from BlogHer, we went back to the hotel and I ordered dinner for us (yes – at 8:30).
The next morning, we got the kids up early, and I told them about where we were going – WE’RE GOING TO THE CIRCUS!!! They were very excited. We headed into Boston the long way. We got into Boston around 9:40 – plenty of time to make it to the pre show for the circus.
Herein lies the problem.
THERE ARE NO SIGNS IN THE ENTIRE CITY OF BOSTON THAT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE TD NORTH GARDEN OR whatever the frig they call the place.
NONE.
ZERO.
ZIP.
We spent from 9:45 to 1pm to finally give up and head home. It sucked. Big time. Big BIG time. The kids didn’t get the circus. I didn’t get my Boston fix. Nothing.
We wound up with an over priced lunch in Salem on the way home. That was it.
The entire reason why they even came with me was to go to the CIRCUS.
Sigh.
So then on Wednesday was Anthony’s birthday. We had a small party, and then yesterday, my mom, dad and 2 of my nephews came up and we had a bigger party at the park. Outside in October. In New Hampshire.
Yeah – I’m a freakin brain surgeon. We FROZE. I bought a big box of hot chocolate from Dunkin Donuts, we ordered some pizzas, I bought them all swords & shields to play with. The kids didn’t freez e- they were too busy on their sugar/carb high and running around to get cold – the adults, though?
Yeah – we froze.
Here’s 9 of the 10. The last one showed an hour late.
I didn’t get the parents’ permission to post their faces, so I x’d them out.
So anyway, that’s the main reason why it’s been quiet around here. It pisses me off that even after 13 years, we can’t be in a place of solidarity when it comes to pretty much anything.

Pink for October
about 1 year ago - 3 comments
As you may have heard, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Just as Alzheimer’s is an important cause, so is breast cancer – or any cancer awareness.
As I’ve written before, and again today over at Pink for October, my Nana beat cancer TWICE. There are so many people who are dealing with cancer in some area of their lives, or themselves. I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t been affected by cancer in some way.
We in the mommy blogging community, I think, are even more exposed to people who are dealing with some form of cancer – THANKFULLY, there are treatments to help. Unfortunately, sometimes, they do not work – and those of us who get enthralled in their lives are hurt terribly for those who we lose.
I watched Christina Applegate on Oprah earlier this week. She was such an inspiration. Such an inspiration, in fact, I made the call yesterday to my doctor to make an appointment for my “annual” – something I haven’t actually had done in over 2 years. I’m going next Tuesday. I’ll also make an appointment for my first mammogram. I’m going to try to keep my mind off all the “possibilities” that might be hanging around in my nether regions or breasts – simply because I haven’t been checked in 2 years. I will not let the fear get to me and cancel the appointment.
For me, going Pink for October is more than just the color. It’s hopefully going to be a mind set that will sink in, once and for all, to take better care of myself, so that I do not have to walk the walk that WhyMommy or Lisa or the numerous other women that I simply do not have the emotional capacity to read.
So, although I’ve Gone Pink for October on several blogs that I either write on or have designed (and will on this one as well), it’s more than that for me this year.
Quote of the Day:
Progress depends on people knowing they’ll be able to profit from their ideas.

Perfect Post award winner

I’m a day late & a dollar short – well, a few days short, anyway. I just found out today that Stephanie from over at Adventures in Babywearing is back to her babywearing ways – she had her baby! She, her hubby and her 3 older boys welcomed baby girl IVY to their family 2 weeks ago, and I missed the hubbub, because well – I suck
So, when I found out today, I went over and read back to her birth story and if ever there was a perfect birth story – so beautifully written that it brought tears to my eyes – this is it.
Congratulations Stephanie! She’s beautiful

Questions, Part II
about 1 year ago - Comments Off
This week, I’m taking a break from blogging so that I can get ready for the upcoming homeschool year for both Anthony and my new preschooler, Libbybug. So I thought I’d use this opportunity to answer the questions that were posed to me during my Bloggy Giveaway #1 last week. Unfortunately, britetix didn’t ask you for your URLs but if you’re reading your question here, please feel free to comment with your URL and I’ll link back to you for a lil linky love
Thanks!
Dawntrenee asks: “How do you handle that cold weather. –44”
The truth is, when it’s that cold, you try not to go out at all. The car is very sluggish to start at such cold temps, and you have to have a very good or NEW battery. You have to let the car sit there and warm up for a good, long time, and most of the time, the engine never fully warms up enough to give heat. When you drive, the sane trucks haven’t even been able to get rid of the ice because it’s just too cold to work. On those days, you don’t go out to check the mail or do anything that’s not truly NECESSARY. Fortunately, they’re not TOO often. The winter that I was pregnant with Libby was when it was horrible – I was working full time, so I had to go out in the mornings, when it was at it’s coldest. We had an old Subaru that HATED the cold. I was so miserable!
Beckie asks: “What do you do with the pictures you have printed? Family snapshots and the like?”
The sad, sad truth is, Beckie, that 99% of the photos I’ve printed are in piles on my desk or in a box. I do not have the time nor patience to sit and put them in albums LOL
Christine asks: “Am I going to win?
”
Nope.
lol
Emma asks: "I would like some tips on photographing children.”
The very best tip I’ve ever gotten or read about photographing kids was to get down on their level. Get in close. So that’s what I try to do and it’s definitely produced some nice results.
Memarie asks: “If you were to design your own perfume, what would it smell like and what would you call it?”
I used to love perfume – but now, most of them make me sneeze. So if I did design it, it’d be very light and clean smelling. I want it to linger when I’m gone, but not be so cloisome that you are wishing I’d leave right NOW!
Amanda asks: “How did you get your banner like that at the top? it’s beautiful.”
Well, since I had to change my website theme halfway through the contest, I’m not sure which banner you’re referring to, Amanda. The previous one (the one with the gerber daisies) I made myself, with a photo I took myself. This current one is just one from a theme I found online when I messed up my other one and didn’t have time to fix LOL
Ashley asks: "How do you like your eggs?"
lol I like my eggs anyway you want to cook them for me. Otherwise, I’ll take them poached – but not in water. If you poach them in water, please put them in a cup so I can drain the water off before putting them on my toast
Thanks!
Thanks for the great questions. I’ll be answering more tomorrow

I haven’t tried it, but I’ve heard that acupuncture is good for pain, maybe it could help numbness too?
