In the first month of Zachary’s life, we’ve taken …
In the first month of Zachary’s life, we’ve taken 360 photos of him or ya know, something related to him, which equals nearly 280 Megs of photos – this is more than the first harddrive I ever got from hubby (he likes to buy me technology gifts LOL).
Unfortunately, even though we have a pretty nice camera, most of the shots come out blurry because we choose not to blind the child – and using the indoor setting means holding the camera still, something that apparently we’re incapable of doing. However, in the interests of keeping this blog somewhat baby related, and not just the “Dawn’s Whine convention”, here’s some random shots of the last month.
Truly one of the first shots of Zachary, the redeye was awful but the nursery nurse actually fixed it for me because I hadn’t installed photoshop on my laptop lol!
While this is definately not a flattering shot of me, I show it to you so that when I show you my “after” shot, you’ll say “WOW!”
The hospital uses such harsh chemicals on their laundry, my sensitive-skinned children don’t stand a chance – as soon as I started dressing him in his own clothes, his skin cleared right up.
Flowers from hubby’s company and hubby/kids
The “surprise” birthday party that hubby & the kids arranged for our coming home celebration. I had no clue about it!
I tend to take alot of pictures of Zachary when he’s sleeping because he seems so peaceful. When he’s awake, he tends to have this serious face on most of the time.

Hubby got Zachary to laugh this weekend, and this is the result. I am just upset that I missed it!

And finally, his first bath! Both of my other kids cried during their baths, and I suspect it was because their bellies hadn’t quite finished healing yet. I waited this long for Zach’s just so he wouldn’t scream bloody murder, and he rewarded me with quiet wonder and no peeing! LOL
Happy 1 month birthday, my beautiful baby boy!

Recapping the week + a giveaway
about 1 year ago - Comments Off
Such a momentous week this was! Of course, there was that lil hubub on Tuesday, but BUT, do you know what else happened?
Zachary started doing puzzles! I’d bought him this wooden puzzle for Christmas but didn’t it put it away well enough and he & his sister found it. They futzed around with it for a couple of days, and then it SOMEHOW got opened. Somehow. I’m sure it was a sprite or a gremlin or something. Anyway, Zachary kept trying to get in there, and I finally relented and opened it for him last night and that boy went to town! He loved it. He played with it for well over an hour. Later, both Libby & Zachary played with it for another hour or so before they got around to pretending they were action figures or something. But it was just SO cool to watch!
This morning, Zachary woke up WAY TOO early, and wasn’t interested in his bottle, so I pulled the puzzle over to him (he insisted on having it in the bed) and he went to work on it again. Last night, he was being a very 20-month-oldish in trying to force the pieces in. This morning, he woke up with a new tactic in mind, and now he finesses them into place a lot more gently, and therefore, more successfully. I sat beside him, doing the animal noises of each animal when he’d get the piece in, and tell him what it was.
In other news, there’s been some fun stuff going on at my other sites, so I thought I’d let you know.
On Reality…really?, I wrote about this week’s fun on Dancing with the Stars.
Over on my reviews blog, I reviewed Ghiradelli Chocolates (yeah, I know you’re jealous now!), Promise SureShots (that I have coupons to give out!) and Chex Mix Bars. The best part of all that was that along with the Chex Mix Bars – I got a GREAT giveaway for you as well! But you’ll have to go over there to see what I mean
On my photography blog, I posted a beautiful photo for today’s photohunter theme, Together.
Finally, this weekend I will be working on moving my site to my new host (if you are in the market for a new web host, PLEASE let me know!), so I’m mostly posting this for those who read through their RSS feeds. I’m hoping to fix the IE problems, as well as update things, etc. Hopefully, it won’t be too long or too painful!

History
about 1 year ago - 2 comments
Dear Anthony, Libby & Zachary:
Today marks a historic day for our country. For the first time, an African American man may possibly be elected as the next President of our United States. While you may not understand the true significance of this, it is because of the last 40 years of change that has made this even a remote possibility.
When I was born, African Americans were looked down upon – were not thought of as equals. They were treated badly, held separately from the “white” people, and in general, had a much harder way of life. But over these last 40 years, those times have changed greatly. Because of those changes, this man who has had the courage to even attempt to become president, and has stood up to so many who told him he should not, and might possibly be our new leader. It truly is historic.
As always, there will be people who will discount this day as no such thing – by negating his qualifications or his sincerity. But when all is said and done, when I go to cast my vote later today, I will remember what this man, and the people who came before him who paved his way, have gone through to try to become our President. Today, I will do what I can to make history. I will show up, state my name, go to my booth and cast my ballot.
In many places around the world, women STILL are not allowed to vote. In fact, it was not until just 2 years before your great-grandmother was born were they allowed to vote in the US. Because of that, I make sure to vote, because of the women who came before me who fought for my rights.
As I write this, Mr. Obama has won his first precinct, that of a little tiny village just 15 minutes from here – Dixville Notch, NH. Perhaps he’ll enjoy that victory most, because it’s been 40 YEARS since a democrat won there.
I will record my vote tomorrow on video, to show you, my children, such an important day. I will keep that video as a reminder, no matter the results.

PBN Photo Contest

Parent Bloggers Network has partnered up with Blurb.com for a really cool Halloween photo contest and so you KNOW I have to enter. I didn’t get too many of Zachary in his costume yesterday mostly because as soon as I’d put him down, he’d take of running. It was particularly funny in Applebees, where we went for dinner. He had everyone laughing at the chicken running around. It was lots of fun.
In any event, here’s the photo I’m entering for a chance to win a Blurb book! I am entering this in the category of Cutest Costume 2 and under.
The top of his hood, which is the beak,
and of course, googly eyes!

This post is mostly for those folks who read me through their feed readers. I just wanted to invite you to come over and visit the actual blog and take a look at my new look! Let me know what you think.
Oh, and take a look at my contortionist son – he was watching a dvd and that was his comfy spot lol:
Oh! And I got hired to photograph a wedding! I am psyched! It’s in June and it’s pretty informal, which is perfect! Craigslist.com rocks! Ok… I think that’s… oh, no – wait – one more thing…
Deb from Mom of 3 Girls awarded me with this – isn’t that neat?
I, of course, have to pass it on to Stacey, Jane, Audrey & Sharon, Bubba’s Sis and YOU! Yes, YOU!

Whaa???

Yesterday, Anthony & I were coming home from a trip to WalMart. As we were coming up the walk from the parking lot, we saw his friend’s mother (actually, she’s his grandmother but since she’s raising them, they call her mom) and said hi and she was commenting on how big the icicles were hanging from the roof over their door and how her grandson had been trying to knock them down with snowballs. Then she called attention to the icicles hanging over our door (they’re about 4 feet long) and made this comment:
you could put zach outside your door, then shut and lock the door…
As she was saying that, we’d just gotten to our door, and we continued into the house with me saying “What the f*** did she just say???” and asking Anthony if he’d heard her – he had – oooooh, did he get mad, too. I was left wondering WHY would you say something like that, but ESPECIALLY about a BABY???? Being that he’s MY baby notwithstanding, why why WHY would someone say that about anyone’s kid? I’ve mostly always been on good terms with this woman – as has Anthony. I simply do not understand it. So I’m wondering if maybe I misconstrued her comment – so I am here, asking my wonnnnnnderful readers if they can please find some other way of looking at that comment that doesn’t include doing bodily harm to MY CHILD.

Happy Birthday, Spaghetti Face
about 1 year ago - Comments Off
We celebrated Zachary’s 1st Birthday yesterday and he seemed to have a great time. He had his favorite dinner (spaghetti) and then we moved onto the fun portion of the night- CAKE! He wasn’t sure what to do about the frosting – but he figured it out eventually LOL Then we went into the living room for presents and he had fun chasing after the various things, particularly the balloons LOL The monkey on the top of the ball, in the bottom left picture, giggles and stays on top of the ball no matter how hard Zachary tries to knock him off. We had a very nice evening.
And TODAY is my Daddy’s birthday! Happy Birthday Dad! Like I always say, You’re my FAVORITE daddy
*This collage thingie I made using photoshop’s photomerge tool – it’s not a really neat layout like Stacey makes, but I was too impatient to wait for her to call me back to get an idea of where to get stuff to make him a neat page

Now is the time
about 1 year ago - Comments Off
Sorta . I mean – I know somewhere in my blackened, charred heart that it’s time for me to start that long, Lonnnnnng process of reclaiming myself. Me. Dawn Marie ########################. Now that Zachary has finished nursing and doesn’t need ME specifically anymore – and I can take more time for myself without feeling quite so guilty, it’s time to start looking to see who I want to be when I grow up.
Isn’t it funny (but not ha ha funny) how I’m the type of person who has never been able to do one of those “where do you see yourself in 5/10/20 years” questions with any kind of honesty. I’ve NEVER been able to – sure, I could make up an answer … “oh, in 5 years, I can see myself in a management situation, perhaps office manager or equivalent” blah blah blah – but it was never an honest answer. I don’t know why I’ve never been able to do that. I never really had a “career” before I had kids. Before I met Jimmy & moved to TN, I had spent the most time in a job as an administrative assistant and by the time I left that job, I hated it. I didn’t LIKE being a grown man’s mama, and that’s what I felt like. I left the job because at that point, I wanted to pursue events planning – something I’ve really always wanted to try. But then things sort of got curtailed and within the year, I was pregnant with Anthony and would become a stay at home mom.
The closest I’ve ever come to “seeing” myself in the future was a couple of years ago, before I became pregnant with Zachary, I was taking some business classes and the instructor asked us to visualize ourselves a year from then. After a few minutes, I started to see myself – a year from then. Slimmer (I was in the process of losing weight and it was always on my mind) and looking happy and confident as I stood before a class I was teaching. I could see the successful me.
Well, that was 3 years ago. At that point, I was working on developing my business as an eBay educator as well as doing graphics & web design, teaching technology classes and in my free time, selling on eBay. Everything was going pretty well, too – I was making (some) money – enough so that Jimmy could stay at home w/the kids and work on HIS love (music) while I did what I (sort of) enjoyed at the time – teaching.
Then, everything changed. I knew that the pregnancy would take it’s toll on me, and so as I got farther along, I stepped back from booking classes in various cities and states around me. I WELCOMED IT because teaching is a lot harder than it looks. When all was said and done, I didn’t really miss it – because it really wasn’t something that came easily to me. I would have to steel myself to stand in front of a class of adults and teach them whatever it was I was teaching – but I never really felt like I was effective in it. I got great reviews, but it still didn’t feel like *me*.
So then Zachary came and of course, my world became Baby Central 24/7. That’s a role that’s harder than anything, as everyone says, especially while battling depression AND a 4 yr old. But obviously, a year later, Zachary has come out of it unscathed, and I – other than a few extra scars, seemingly have too. I’m left wondering what’s next?
When Jimmy bought me my new camera for Christmas, he also stressed that when tax time came around, we’d also buy me some of the accoutrements that go with photography, such as backdrops, lighting, etc. So now that time is here, and I’ve been picking up things here and there – mostly filters and whatnot – and looking at classes to take to really get a better – WORING knowledge of my camera. Photography has ALWAYS been in the background of my life – and now I think I’d like to bring it really to the forefront and develop it and work it.
Jimmy found a job online last week that I got really excited about. It’s for someone to travel to Vermont State Parks and photograph the activities, campgrounds, campers, etc. You get free admission to the places, free camping, and they reimburse for travel and supplies. It’s an internship, but what fun would that be! I could take my kids with me and do what I love to do. So I’m considering applying for it.
Something else I’m thinking about is offering my services to photograph products for a local place where I was teaching classes. They have a store where the members of this organization can sell their items, but anyone with a website needs *good* photos for it – and I can do that pretty well too. I think, though, that doing anything related to photography at this point is what excites me – and it’s been a while since anything got my attention like this has
So I took a baby step this weekend and submitted 4 of my pictures to a stock photo website. That’s where people who need good quality photos for print & web work go to buy photos that they can use without violating copyright laws. I’m waiting to see if they’re accepted – if they are, then if someone chooses to buy one of my photos, I get a percentage of the sale. So we’ll see. I’m also considering making photo notecards to sell online and perhaps at the local craft shows this summer and fall. I’m not sure if the market can stand yet another person selling flowers and mountain pics, but I’ve got time to investigate it anyway. But I guess the important thing is I’m looking past the days of diapers and trying to find somewhere to stand on my own. We’ll see what happens
Oh, and on a separate but related note, I have made an appointment with the neurologist to get back on that journey of figuring out what’s wrong with me. Now that my belly has mostly healed, it’s time to figure out what’s causing the whole body tremor, lip twitching, muscle twitching, numbness, flashing, etc.!
